PURPOSE: To inform and assist clients in utilizing the protocol(s) required by the histology laboratory for submission of research samples into the laboratory to provide quality preparations. PROCEDURE: 1. The Histology Laboratory is open to receive specimens between the hours of 8:30 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. 2. If it is your first visit to the histology laboratory, one of our technicians will personally evaluate the needs of your project with you. We will help you complete a form that outlines the details of our project. 3. Samples should be dissected prior to transport to the laboratory. If you need help with dissection, please schedule a time to use the hood for gross dissection in the histology laboratory. 4. Samples should be in cassettes. If samples are extremely small or need special orientation, contact the laboratory for help. 5. Clearly label your cassettes with a #2 Pencil. 6. Transport your cassettes to the histology laboratory in 30% - 60% Ethanol or 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin solution in a leak proof container as required by ORCBS. (We can help you locate containers) 7. Label the container with the researchers name and identify the transport solution. 8. Deliver samples to room 2133 Biomedical Physical Sciences building. Hand them to a technician. DO NOT LEAVE SAMPLES ON THE COUNTER OR OUTSIDE THE SECURE AREA OF THE LABORATORY. 9. We are ready and will to help you individually with special requests or concerns, but you must ASK! 10. By documenting problems and more closely monitoring the research submission process, we can comply with CAP guidelines and maintain our certification.
