Science Peka Form 4 (Exp 2)

Experiment 2 studied the effect of impurities on the boiling point of water. It was hypothesized that the presence of impurities would increase the boiling point. Distilled water and a solution of distilled water with added salt were brought to a boil and their temperatures recorded. The results showed that the boiling point of the salt solution was higher, supporting the hypothesis that impurities increase the boiling point of pure water.

Experiment 2: Effect of Impurities on the Boiling Point of Pure Water Aim: To study the effect of impurities on the boiling

point of water Problem Statement: Does the presence of impurities influence the boiling point of water? Hypothesis: The presence of impurities increases the boiling point of pure water Variable: a) manipulated : the presence or absence of salt b) responding: boiling point of water c) constant : volume of water Apparatus : Distillation flask, glass rod, thermometer, wire gauze, tripod stand, Bunsen burner Material: Distilled water, common salt Procedure : 1) The apparatus is set up as in the diagram 2) 150 cm3 of distilled water is poured into the distillation flask 3) the water is heated until boils 4) the temperature when the water boils is recorded 5) the water is replaced with the same amount of distilled water at room temperature 6) the spatula of salt is added into the water 7) the mixture is stirred with a glass rod and heated until it boils 8) the temperature when the mixture boils is recorded 9) the result are recorded in a water

Results:

Substance
Distilled water Distilled water + salt
Discussion:

Boiling point ( 0C)

1. Impurities increases the b oiling point of pure water 2. Salt acts as impurities. Impurities decreases the melting point of pure water (ice) 3. The hypothesis is accepted Conclusion: The presence of impurities increases the boiling point of pure water.
