T h e m a c h i n e d e s i g n c o n c e p t i s applicable as acompressor, pump, motor, or engine. Simpli c i t y o f d e s i g n b a s e d o n spherical ball piston enable a low moving part count, high power to weightratio, elimination of valve train and water cooling systems, and perfectdynamic balance.The new design concept utilizes novel kinematic design to completelyeliminate inertial loads that would contribute to sliding friction. Also, lowleakage is maintained without piston rings by using a small clearance ont h e b a l l p is t o n , r e s u l t i n g i n c h o k e d f l o w p a s t t h e b a l l . Th e s e features p r o v i d e t h e p o t e n t i a l f o r a n e n g i n e w i t h h i g h e r e f f i c i e n c y t h a n conventional piston engines. The engine design - utilizes existing recenttechnology to advantage, such as silicon nitride ball pistons, so a largedevelopment effort is not required.
