I Spss-Pasw: Ntroduction To

This document provides an outline for a training session on SPSS. It introduces SPSS Predictive Analytics Software (PASW) and outlines how to manage and describe data using SPSS Statistics 17.0. It discusses importing and exporting data, selecting cases, creating and recoding variables, and producing descriptive statistics like frequencies tables, cross-tabulations, measures of central tendency, and graphs. The next session will cover statistical analysis techniques like ANOVA, non-parametric tests, correlations, regression models and logistic models.

Describe

SPSS PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS SOFTWARE (PASW)

PASW: Predictive Analytics Software It is comprehensive package for statistical analysis of data with techniques from the very simple to the very sophisticated.

General use:

point and click interface which makes easy to use especially for beginners to run simple statistical analysis. friendly data editor that resembles Excel that allows you to enter your data and attributes of your data basic analysis functionalities in regression (the advanced models are available only for syntax users)

DATA MANAGEMENT
Variable definitions in Data Editor -Variable View

12

DATA MANAGEMENT
Manage data values and variables

Sort cases
Data Sort Cases

Sort variables
Data Sort Variables
Sort variables by variable names

13

DATA MANAGEMENT

Select cases
Data Select Cases
You can select cases with conditions, or do random selection, or based on time/case range, or use filter variable.

With selection, the output can generate filter variable indicating selection results, or copy selected cases to a new data set, or delete unselected cases.

If you want to go back for all cases, go to the same dialog and choose All Cases.

If you choose to generate filter variable, in the bottom of SPSS data editor, there is Filter On indicating you are currently filtering cases. 14

DATA MANAGEMENT

Output for group result

Data Split File
E.g.: Generate analysis results for the married and unmarried people respectively.

There is Split by marital at the bottom of SPSS data editor, indicating you are currently in the split-file status. You can go back to the Split File dialog 15 box and choose back Analyze all cases.

DATA MANAGEMENT

Create new variable by equations

Transform Compute Variable

E.g.: Compute the average income per head in household and save the results into a new variable.

Type in the name of new variable

Type in the expression

SPSS functions

You can define condition to satisfy for the computation.

16

DATA MANAGEMENT

Recode numeric values

Transform Recode into Different Variables

Indicate the new variables for recoded values.

Age <= 20 -> Agegroup=1 20 < Age <= 40 -> Agegroup=2 40 < Age <= 60 -> Agegroup=3 60 < Age -> Agegroup=4

E.g.: Generate age groups from variable Age

17

DATA MANAGEMENT

Recode string values

Transform Automatic Recode

E.g.: Recode variable Gender male = 1 female = 2

Indicate the new variables for recoded gender values

By default, SPSS generates values alphabetically from lowest value. You can choose to recode from highest value. 18

DATA MANAGEMENT

Deal with date and time values

Transform Date and Time Wizard / Create Time Series

19

DATA MANAGEMENT
Data description

Data description is used to: Check data: outliers, odd numbers Describe data: mean, frequency, percentage, etc.

Qualitative (nominal, ordinal) data: Descriptive statistics (frequency table, cross-tabulation) Graphics (bar / pie chart) Quantitative (scale, interval, ratio) data: Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, median) Graphics (histogram, boxplot, scatterplot)
20

DATA MANAGEMENT
Describe data using CODEBOOK:
Analyze Reports Codebook

Option OUTPUT: selects variable information to display.

Option STATISTICS: selects statistics to display.

21

DATA MANAGEMENT
Techniques for describing qualitative data

Frequency table One-way table: for one variable Frequency; percentage; valid percentage; cumulative percentage Cross-tabulation Two-way table: for two variables Frequency, percentage Bar/Pie chart
22

DATA MANAGEMENT

Generate frequency tables

E.g.: Generate frequency table for income groups

Analyze Descriptive Statistics Frequencies

23

DATA MANAGEMENT
Try to generate frequency tables for income groups and primary vehicle price groups.

24

DATA MANAGEMENT
You can plot bar/pie charts from: 1. Frequency Table -> Charts 2. Chart Builder under menu Graphs

25

DATA MANAGEMENT
3. Graphboard Template Choose under menu Graphs

26

DATA MANAGEMENT

Generate cross-tabulations
Analyze Descriptive Statistics Crosstabs

E.g.: Generate cross-tabulation for income groups and the number of years with current employers.

27

DATA MANAGEMENT

28

DATA MANAGEMENT
You can plot bar charts from Chart Builder , Graphboard Template Chooser or other graph tools under menu Graphs.

29

DATA MANAGEMENT
Techniques for describing quantitative data

Measures of central tendency Mean, median, mode, etc. Measures of dispersion Range Standard deviation (S.D.), etc. Distribution Skewness, kurtosis. Graphs Histogram Boxplot Scatter plot

30

DATA MANAGEMENT

Produce summary statistics

Analyze Descriptive Statistics Descriptives
E.g.: describe statistics for job satisfaction results.

31

DATA MANAGEMENT
Analyze Descriptive Statistics Frequencies

32

DATA MANAGEMENT
Analyze Descriptive Statistics Explore

E.g.: describe statistics for job satisfaction results for married and unmarried people respectively.
33

DATA MANAGEMENT
