Subtraction Using different strategies

Working mathematically focus: Introduction: Revision of previous lesson Counting drills Big idea explanation Modelled whole class activity: (introduce or reinforce concepts, focus on specific language NAPLAN example) (10 mins)

Number facts for 10. Show powerpoint

Recall language of chance -list Discuss events at school that are possible, impossible or certain to happen Pick a chance card in pairs. Describe the chance of that event. List an event to match each probability term

In pairs roll dice 10 times, tally results. Combine and discuss

Brainstorm subtraction vocab.

Model how to split an addend into two parts to make a ten, e.g. 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3 = 13

Revise bridging to 10, e.g. 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3 = 13 Extend the strategy to become bridging to the nearest ten, e.g. 17 + 5 becomes 17 + 3 + 2 = 22 Add pairs of 2-digit numbers by adding the tens first, e.g. 34 + 25 becomes 50 + 9 = 59 Levelled sets of sums to practice the strategy up to three digit numbers start groups in different places 1A 2B 3B 4C 5D Choose students to demo and explain strategy

Place cubes in a clear bag. Students describe chance of picking each colour

Model counting back on a number line and hundred chart to solve subtractions. Subtraction webs

Group/ Independent activities: (20 mins)

Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 Mental strategies- RN problem solving Bridging through ten game ict games Y2 students not confident in bridging. Some Y3 need practice Add two numbers. Bridge through ten to make 20.

Draw and label events according to chance. Write more likely/less likely sentences Throwing a double with two dice. Predict how many times. Toss and count. Compare results. Record the best label to describe the chance Reflect on chance in everyday life

Closure/ Reflection: Questions posed (10 mins) Teacher notes for evaluation:

Draw a bag of 5 shapes using two shapes. Which is most likely to get picked, why? Now colour using three colours. Which is least likely. Make a new bag. Predict result then: Toss a coin 12 times. Tally. Discuss findings. Make a graph of results. Combinations sport uniforms Play Heads and Tails

Use number lines to count back for subtraction Use number lines to count back for subtraction Use number lines to count back for subtraction Use hundred chart to count back for subtraction Supply missing element in subtraction sentence Solve subtraction word problems eg 11 trees planted but 4 died, How many left?
