Physics: Jabatan Pelajaran Terengganu

The document is a physics module that discusses various concepts related to pressure and fluid dynamics. It contains diagrams and questions about instruments that measure atmospheric pressure like a barometer. It also discusses manometers, pressure in liquids at various depths, and hydraulic systems. Key concepts covered include: - How a barometer works and calculating atmospheric pressure - Pressure differences in U-tube manometers and their use to measure gas pressure - Greater pressures being exerted by liquids at increasing depths - Hydraulic systems using high-pressure liquid to amplify applied forces

Diagram 1.1 shows an instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure .

Diagram 1.1

(a) (i)

Name the instrument. .....................................................................................................................

(ii) Why is mercury use in the instrument ? ..................................................................................................................... (b) Calculate the atmospheric pressure in N m - 2 . [ Density of Mercury = 1.36 x 10 4 kg m - 3]

(c) Diagram 1. 2 shows the instrument being placed in a vacuum chamber .

Diagram 1.2

Complete the sentence by ticking ( the correct word in the box. ) The level of the mercury column in Diagram 2.1 is at .. P

Diagram 2.1 shows a manometer which can be used to measure gas pressure.

Diagram 2.1 (a) (i) Name the liquid X. ..... (ii) Give the reason for your answer in (a)(i). ..

(b) The gas tap is opened so that gas can flow to the rubber tube into the manometer.

Diagram 2.2 (i) On Diagram 2.2, draw the levels of the liquid in both arms of the manometer if the pressure of the gas greater than the atmospheric pressure. If the pressure of the gas = 100 cm of Hg , the atmospheric pressure = 75 cm of Hg, what is the different height of the liquid X in the manometer ?

(ii)

Diagram 3.1 shows a student jumping from a certain height towards the floor which resulted in a leg injury. Diagram 3.2 shows a broken egg when it is dropped from a certain height.

Diagram 3.1 (a)

Diagram 3.2

What is the type of motion of the egg and the student while moving in the air. ..

(b) Based on Figures 5.1 and 5.2 name one physical quantity that causes injury to the student and breaks the egg. .. (c) Suggest a method that would have : (i) reduced injury to the students leg. .... (ii) prevented the egg from breaking. .. (d) Explain why the methods you suggested in (c) (i) and (c) (ii) can help avoid leg injury and the broken egg. .. (e) State the relationship between the answers in (b) and (d). ...

(f)

Use the relationship in (e) to explain why a ball with a low air pressure does not travel far when kicked. ..

Diagram 4.1 and Diagram 4.2 show two damps with different shape.

Diagram 4.1

Diagram 4.2

(a) Compare the pressure of water at point A and B in (i) Diagram 4.1 .. (ii) Diagram 4.2 .. (b) (i) Based on the answers in (a)(i) and (a)(ii), which damp is better? .. (ii) Explain the reason for your answer in (b)(i). .. ... ... (c) The depth of water in the lake is 25 m and the density of the water is 1 000 kg m-3. Calculate the pressure of the water at the bottom of the lake.

(d) Diagram 4.3 shows an apparatus is used to remove water from a beaker to a cylinder. The volume of the water in the beaker is same as the volume of water in the cylinder.

Diagram 4.3 (i) Name the system for removing the water. .. (ii) Mark the water level in the cylinder in Diagram 4.4 when the water stops to flow if the water level in the beaker is at P.

Diagram 4.4 (iii) Explain your answer in b(ii). .. .. (iv) By using the same apparatus, suggest one method to remove all the water into the cylinder. ..
