1.1 Power screw is a screw & nut system used to change angular or rotory motion in to linear motion & normally to transmit power. 1.2 The essential elements of power screw are a screw and a nut. 1.3 A power screw can be machine powered or manually operated. 1.4 In order to cause relative motion between two elements i.escrew and nut ,a torque is applied to one of these twoelements ,causing it to rotate and either itself or other elements in an axial direction.
2. APLLICATION : 1. Lead screw of machine tools 2. Screw jacks 3. Clamps 4. Mechanical presses 5. Tensile testing machines and vices

Design of power screw QuestionA screw jack is to lift to a load of 110KN through a height of 400mm.The elastic strength of screw material in tension and compression is 420MPa .The material for nut is phosphor bronze for which the elastic limit may be taken as 190MPa in tension, and 95MPa in shear.Handle is made up of plain carbon steel having yield strength in tension is 420MPa. The bearing pressure between the nut and the screw is not to be exceed 10N/mm2.Design the screw jack assuming factor of safty is 5,coefficint of friction between nut & screw and cup & collar is 0.18 & 0.20 respectivly. The design should Include 1)Design of screw 2)Design of nut 3)Design of handle 4)Design of body ANSWER:GIVEN: - W=110KN H=400mm=Lift SCREW: Syt=Syc=420MPa, t=c= (Syt)=120MPa.

Bearing pressure (Pb) =10N/mm2 Factor of safety (F.S) =5 SOLUTION:Design of screw Consider the load lifted by screw jack cause the compressive stress on the screw. c= dc=40.83mm 42mm d0=42+P=40+8=50mm dm=42+0.5P=46mm
Torque required to lift the load= (Mt) nut and screw=W*tan (+)* But, =tan () 0.18=tan () =10.20 And Tan ()= =3.168 Therefore, (Mt1) nut and screw=601.23N/mm2 =
Actual torsional stressed developed in screw is less than the permissible value for screw mat.
