Sheet 1: Cairo University Faculty of Engineering Department of Communications 4 YEAR, 2012/2013 Process Control

The document contains questions about feedback control systems for an engineering course. It asks the student to: 1) Identify the components of feedback control systems and explain their relationships using diagrams of example processes. 2) Determine if a toaster control system is open-loop or closed-loop and identify its set point and controlled variable. 3) Suggest feedback control loops for controlling temperature and composition in a chemical process, classifying its variables, and drawing a block diagram. 4) Do the same for a liquid storage tank process that maintains a constant level in one tank.

CAIRO UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS PROCESS CONTROL

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING 4th YEAR, 2012/2013

SHEET 1
1) Describe the four necessary components of a feedback control system.

2) Review the processes sketched in figure (1) (a through d): Identify the four components in each one. Explain the causal relationship between the manipulated and controlled variables. Explain whether the control valve should be opened or closed to increase the value of the controlled variable.

3) The toaster shown can be set to the desired darkness of the toasted bread via its darkness (timer) knob. Is this control system open-loop or closed-loop?

What are the set point and the controlled variable?

4) The preliminary process design has been prepared for the system in figure.the key variables to be controlled for the systems are: 1. Composition of the output product. 2. Temperature of the output product. For each variable, suggest a possible feedback control loop ,then: a) Classify the variables of this process (Fs, FR, FT, FC, FO, TC, AO, TO and L) into: Input variables (specify manipulated variables and disturbances) Output variables Insignificant variables.

b) Draw this possible feedback loop block diagram. Note: there is no relation between temperature and the composition of the mixed liquid.

5)(midterm 2003) Liquid Storage Tanks - the two tanks are used for the temporary and longerterm storage of a liquid chemical product. The demand is satisfied from the temporary storage tank (tank 1), while tank 2 is used to accumulate the liquid product in excess of the demand. It is desired to keep H1 constant by varying an appropriate manipulated variable (the valve is not shown). Note that H2 is allowed to float to satisfy mismatches between supply and demand, and the direction of the flow between tank1 and tank2 is determined according to the height H1 and H2.
