11 General Orders

The 11 General Orders outline the duties and responsibilities of a sentinel guarding a post. The orders instruct the sentinel to take charge of the area within sight or hearing, walk their post attentively while remaining alert, report any violations, relay calls from distant posts, only leave when properly relieved, obey and pass on orders from commanding officers, talk only to those on duty, sound alarms if needed, call for guidance if unsure how to respond, salute officers and colors, and be especially vigilant at night by challenging all persons on or near the post.

11 GENERAL ORDERS

1. To take charge of this post and all government properties in view. 2. To walk my post in military manner. Keeping always on the alerts in everything that takes the place within sight or hearing. 3. To repost all violation of orders I am instructed to enforce. 4. To repeat all calls, from my post more distant from the guard house than my own. 5. To quit my post only when properly relieved. 6. To receive, obey, and pass to the sentinel who relieves me, all orders from the commanding officer, officer today, officers and non-commission officers of the guard house only. 7. To talk to no one except on the line of duty. 8. To give alarm in case of fire or disorder. 9. To call the commander of relief in any case not covered by instruction. 10. To salute all officers, colors and understand not case. 11. To be especially watchful at night, during the time of challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post and to allow no one to pass without proper authority.
