Assessing and Reporting Statement
Assessing and Reporting Statement
Assessment is about getting feedback information and it is important that teachers assess students to establish what they already know in order to establish and bridge the gap between what is understood and what is aimed to be understood and to plan for where to go next (Hattie, 2003, p.2). Following the Curriculum Planning and Programming, Assessing and Reporting to Parents K-12 policy (2006), assessment will be designed so that students can demonstrate achievement of Stage Three outcomes. Valid and reliable assessment strategies will be used and the timing, frequency and nature of the assessment processes will be time efficient and manageable for both teachers and students. The consideration of assessment strategies is an important aspect of programming but also requires additional judgements and adjustments in the course of teaching and learning to best fit the changing needs of my students. Assessment will not just be summative assessment of learning but rather, a focus of assessment in the classroom will be formative and assessment for learning. Assessment for learning will give students opportunities to produce the work that leads to development of their knowledge, skills and understanding. Every day in my classroom, students will be able to demonstrate their learning in the context of their normal activities not just specific assessment tasks. I will use a variety of appropriate assessments for judging student achievement including observations, hands-on/practical tasks, speeches, journals, models/dioramas and tests. Students will be encouraged to be able to self-assess their progress. The use of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria across the KLAs provides a visual checklist for students to monitor their success in each lesson. Learning Intentions and Success Criteria help to provide not only a clear focus and steps towards achievement for the students but also ensures that every lesson I teach has a clear goal and the means for achieving it are assessable and clearly identified. Assessment information will be used to guide ongoing teaching, monitor and evaluate student progress and to report achievement to parents and relevant authorities in accord with school requirements and Department policy. Parents/carers will be provided with two formal written School Reports across the year and will also have the opportunity to access additional information and discuss their childs learning in both formal and informal means.
