Protest Songs-Your Task

Students will prepare a multimedia presentation over 10 days on a protest song of their choosing to present to the class. Presentations can be in PowerPoint, video, or slideshow format and must include extracts from the song, an explanation of lyrics, the song's context and artist biography, the song's influence and reception. Students will work in groups of up to 3 and receive individual grades for the oral presentation and a group grade for the multimedia document. Presentations will take place between February 20th and 29th.

Protest Songs Final Task

Over the next 10 days, you will prepare a multimedia presentation of a protest song. You can work in a group of 3 people maximum. You will need to present your song in the form of your choice: PowerPoint document, video, slideshow, etc. You may use music, audio extracts (interviews, for example), written documents (articles, bios, etc.) You will also prepare an oral presentation of your work that you will deliver in front of the class. The total should not exceed 15 minutes.

Your presentation must include: Extracts from the song An explanation of the lyrics A general presentation of the context in which it was composed and released A short biography of the artist(s): is the singer a protest singer or was it just this one song? What brought the artist(s) to write such a song? Did the song have any influence? What response did the song get? Analyze the connection between the music and the message (the question of Art vs. Politics), discuss the musical quality of the song, the relevance of the message, etc. Schedule : from Wednesday February 20th to Friday February 29th 20/02: multimedia classroom start working on your presentation. Make sure your choice of song is validated by your teacher. 22/02: Continue working on your presentation in the multimedia classroom start thinking about your oral presentation. Ask your teacher and James for help. 27/02: NO CLASS finish your presentation anyway! 01/03: the first groups will make their presentations to be continued after the break (Wednesday 20/03) You will get two grades: One for the multimedia document (group work) One for you oral presentation (individual work)
