Formulating Goals and Objectives

Formulating clear goals and objectives is important for teaching successful classes. Goals should be flexible and guide what will be assessed, while objectives provide specific steps toward achieving the goals. There are two main challenges: lack of time for planning, and not knowing how to properly formulate goals and objectives. Goals define the overall intended outcomes of the course, while objectives outline what students will be able to do. Objectives should directly relate to and help achieve the goals. Guidelines for formulating goals and objectives include making them clear, specific, and hierarchical while relating directly to evaluation of the course and student learning.
