DOE Method

This document summarizes the British Department of Environment (DOE) method for concrete mix design. It outlines the 5 steps of the method: 1) selecting the water-cement ratio from curves based on compressive strength, 2) estimating water content based on slump and aggregate properties, 3) calculating cement content, 4) determining wet concrete density and total aggregate content, and 5) calculating fine aggregate content based on grading curves. It also describes adjustments made to the method when using fly ash, including reducing water content and calculating new cement and fly ash contents while maintaining the same wet density.

General Outline
The DOE method Mix design with Fly ash

DOE METHOD
f m =f ck + 1.65 Step 1 : selection of w/c from curves Step 2: Estimate water content based on slump/Ve-be time, m.s.a and shape of aggregate zStep 3: Calculate cement content Step 4: Wet density of concrete & total aggregate content

DOE METHOD
Step 5 : Determination of FA based on m.s.a and w/c and grading zone of sand from curves Apparently most logical way of choosing w/c Takes shape of aggregate in to account A mix design procedure with FA is also available

Step 5: Calculate Fine Aggregate content

Fine aggregate content Fagg = pw (Wagg) kg/m3.

pw is determined from graphs - Cagg= Wagg-Fagg

DOE METHOD
When fly ash (PFA) is used in the mix control mix proportions are calculated as usual Total percentage of PFA (pf) is fixed as specified/desired. Water content is reduced depending on pf - W'= W-W
