Holiday Mitten Ornament

Holiday Mitten Ornament

Directions:
With white, starting at cuff, cast on 18 sts. K across for 3 rows. Cut white. Join red. K 1 row, P 1 row. Start thumb gusset: K first 8 sts, place a marker, knit in front and back of next 2 sts (increase) place a marker, K last 8 sts. Purl across next row, slipping markers. Next row: Knit across, slip marker, inc in first st after marker, knit across to within one stitch on next marker, inc in next st, slip marker, knit last 8 sts. Purl across next row, slipping markers. Repeat these last 2 rows until there are 10 sts between markers for thumb, ending on the last inc row to make 10 sts. Purl next row, slipping markers. Divide: K 8, remove marker, slip the 10 thumb sts on a spare length of yarn to be worked later, remove last marker, then cast on 2 sts, and knit across last 8 sts. P next row. K 1 row, P 1 row for 6 rows. Top decrease : * K 2 tog * across row. Purl next row. Repeat these last 2 rows. Cut yarn, thread sewing needle with yarn end and draw through the remaining sts. Do not sew side seam at this time. Thumb: Pick up sts for thumb off the spare length of yarn, and on right side of work, K across. P next row. Decrease: * K 2 tog * across row. P next row. Last row: K 2 tog, K 1, K 2 tog. Cut yarn, thread sewing needle with yarn end, pull through remaining sts, pull to close top, then sew down side seam, sewing to close the open hole at bottom of thumb. Top of mitten. Thread sewing needle with yarn end, pull to close top of mitten, then sew down side seam. Weave in and cut yarn ends. Add a length of yarn at top of cuff for a hanging loop. NOTE: These will actually fit a small baby. Instead of the knit rows of garter stitch at beginning of mitten, work a " * K 1, P 1* ribbing for about 6 rows, or as desired. Make 2 mittens. Crochet a cord, or use ribbon, length as desired, and sew to seam inside of each cuff, so mittens will not get lost.
