Circle of Hearts Socks

A quick (2 - 2 hours) pair of socks sized for a small/med preemie -(newborn) in parenthesis. Materials: 4 double point needles 2.75 mm (US 2) (with the tiny size, I find I can work these best with only 4) approx ounce sports weight/baby yarn approx 10 yards contrasting sports-weight/baby yarn
(gauge:17 st/20 r = 2 )

Instructions: cast on 12 (16) stitches (6 (8) on each needle). I like to hold the 2 needles parallel to each other, casting the 1st on the left, the 2nd on the right and so on. round 2 and 3: 1st needle: k1, inc 1, k across, inc 1, k1. 2nd needle: k1, inc 1, k across, inc 1, k1 round 4 (newborn only): repeat previous round. 24 (32) stitches total - 12 (16) on each needle at this point, split work onto 3 needles - 6 (8) stitches each on #1 and #2 (top) and 12 (16) on #3 (bottom) knit 25(30) rows short row heel row 1: knit across first two needles. Knit across needle #3 until last stitch. wrap last stitch, turn (remainder of heel will beworked on bottom needle only) row 2: slip just-wrapped stitch and purl across stitches just worked until last stitch.

wrap last stitch, turn.

row 3: slip just-wrapped stitch and knit next 10 (14) stitches. wrap next stitch, turn. continue in this manner until 6 (8) stitches remain unworked in the center heel turning: row 1: k6 (8), wrap next stitch, turn (wrapped stitch will have 2 loops) row 2: p7 (9), wrap next stitch, turn. row 3: k8 (10), wrap next stitch, turn continue in this manner until all stitches have been worked leg/finishing: knitting on all needles again, knit 2 rows, then knit 2 stitches on first needle you may want to redistribute the stitches at this time, 8 each for preemie, 8/8/16 for newborn rounds 3 - 6: knit around, changing colors according to chart below (only include grayed area for newborn size) knit 7 rounds with main yarn. cast off (I like to do this with a larger size needles) top should roll down to about the top of the heart pattern
