Complex Calculations: Summary of Formulas: Concentration of The Solution

The document outlines formulas for calculating concentration, rate of administration, and converting between different units for medication calculations. Concentration is calculated as amount of medication divided by volume. Rate of administration is calculated as concentration multiplied by rate of fluid administration. Formulas are provided for converting between mcg/min and mcg/kg/min using patient weight, and between rates expressed in minutes and hours. All answers should be expressed to two decimal places as appropriate for the units.

Complex Calculations: Summary of Formulas

Concentration of the solution

This will have units of mg/mL or mcg/mL.

Concentration =

Amount of medication (in mg or mcg) Volume (mL)

Always express your answer in mg/mL or mcg/mL to 2 decimal places.

Rate of administration of the medication

This will have units of mg/hr or mcg/hr. If the original units are in mg:

Rate (mg/hr) = Concentration (mg/mL) " Rate (mL/hr) ; or

mg mg mL = " hr mL hr
If the original units are in mcg:

!
!

Rate (mcg/hr) = Concentration (mcg/mL) " Rate (mL/hr) ; or

mcg mcg mL = " hr mL hr
The rate of administration of the medication in mg/hr or mcg/hr should always be expressed to 2 decimal places.

Rate of administration of the dilutant:

This will have units of mL/hr. If the original units are in mg:

Rate (mL/hr) =

Rate (mg/hr) ; or Concentration (mg/mL)

mL mg mg = hr hr mL
If the original units are in mcg:

Rate (mL/hr) =

Rate (mcg/hr) ; or Concentration (mcg/mL)

mL mcg mcg = hr hr mL
The rate of administration in mL/hr should always be expressed as a whole number.

Changing between mcg/min and mcg/kg/min

Rate (mg/min) = Rate ordered (mg/kg/min) " Patient's weight (kg) ; or Rate (mcg/min) = Rate ordered (mcg/kg/min) " Patients weight (kg) ! !
Always express rates in mg/min or mcg/min to 2 decimal places.

Rate (mg/kg/hr) = Rate (mg/hr) Patient's weight (kg) Rate (mcg/kg/hr) = Rate (mcg/hr) Patient's weight (kg)

! !

Always express rates in mg/kg/min or mcg/kg/min to 2 decimal places.

Changing between rates in minutes and hours

Rate (mcg/hr) = Rate (mcg/min) " 60 min/hr Rate (mg/hr) = Rate (mg/min) " 60 min/hr ! !
Always express rates in mcg/hr or mg/hr to 2 decimal places.

Rate (mcg/min) = Rate (mcg/hr) 60 min/hr Rate (mg/min) = Rate (mg/hr) 60 min/hr

! !

Always express rates in mcg/min or mg/min to 2 decimal places.
