Question 2

Clearance between the valve and rocker arm in a four-stroke diesel engine is necessary to allow for expansion of parts as the engine warms up. It is usually 0.014 inches for intake valves and 0.018 inches for exhaust valves. To adjust clearance, set each cylinder to top dead center of the compression stroke and check/adjust the clearance of the valves for that cylinder according to specifications, torquing the jam nut afterwards. This ensures proper valve timing and engine performance.

Describe how you would adjust the clearance between the valve and the rocker arm of four

stroke multicylinder diesel engine. Why is clearance necessary and what amount is usually given?

The

clearance is called as a tappet clearance before entering the adjustment method one should understand what is a tappet clearance is. Tappet clearance is a space between the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm. Its purpose is to allow for some mechanical expansion and lengthening of the valve stem and push rods as the engine warms up. This clearance is also called valve lash.

If

the clearance of the rocker arm and valve is greater the valve will close early and open late. If the clearance of the rocker arm and the valve is too small the valve will open early and close late. This behaviour of the rocker arm and the valve can cause early combustion or late combustion which will affect the engine performance.

The procedures referred to a four stroke diesel engine with four cylinder(multi-cylinder) where the firing order is as stated below Firing order is 1-3-4-2.
(2) Set engine with No. 1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke. (3) Check valve clearance on No. 1 and 3 exhaust valves and No. 1 and 2 intake valves per specifications in Table below.

Thoroughly inspect rocker arms for damaged parts if valve clearance exceeds specifications, thoroughly inspect rocker arms for damaged parts. If required, adjust per step 4.
(4) Loosen jam nut and adjust valve clearance on No. 1 and 3 exhaust valves and No. 1 and 2 intake valves to specifications given in table below. Torque jam nut to 20 lb-ft (27 Nm)(the torque depends on the engine) Verify valve clearance and adjust again if necessary.

Table: Valve Clearance Specification (Rocker ArmTo-Valve Tip) VALVES Intake Valves CLEARANCE ALLOWED 0.014 in. (0.35 mm)

Exhaust Valves

0.018 in. (0.045 mm)

(5) Set engine with No. 4 cylinder at TDC compression stroke.

(6) Check valve clearance on No. 2 and 4 exhaust valves and No. 3 and 4 intake valves per specifications in Table above.

If valve clearance exceeds specifications, thoroughly inspect rocker arms for damaged parts. If required, adjust per step 7.
(7) Loosen jam nut and adjust valve clearance on No. 2 and 4 exhaust valves and No. 3 and 4 intake valves to specifications given in Table 4-2. Torque jam nut to 20 lb-ft (27 Nm). Verify valve clearance and adjust again if necessary.

(8) Install rocker arm cover
