Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Area of a Sector Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to calculate the area of a major and minor sector. Most students should be able to calculate the area of compound shapes involving sectors. Some students should be able to calculate the angle or radius of a sector when given the area. Keywords: Sector, Area, Formula, Circle Learning Activities Starter/Introduction The starter reviews calculating the area of a compound shape involving circles since this is prerequisite knowledge for the remainder of the lesson. Students could work in pairs to break the problem down into smaller chunks by considering the four quarter circles to be a whole and adding the square. It maybe worthwhile to have the class attempt the problem without the use of a calculator so that the area is left as a multiple of pi. This will help later in the lesson. Development The first question on the second slide is intended to help the teacher guide the students through deriving the formula for the area of a sector by considering it to be a fraction of an entire circle. Typically, the previous lesson involves the arc length of a circle where students experienced deriving the necessary formulae. Once the class are secure in understanding the origins of the formula use the Geogebra file to demonstrate various areas. Model the solution to the first problem lower down the page. Have the class attempt the second problem on mini-whiteboards for assessment. Students should be able to progress through the questions on the third slide independently. Go through the solutions to maintain pace. Plenary To attempt the problem in the plenary students could work in pairs to devise a strategy. If needed, guide the students to considering the shaded region to be the difference of the triangle and sector. Have the problem attempted on a mini-whiteboard to gauge progress and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could rearrange the formula for the sector area to calculate the radius or angle. Compound shapes involving non-right angled triangles and sectors could be attempted if this has already been covered. Less Able Students may benefit from leaving the answers as multiples of pi.
