Lesson Plan Focus on Speaking: Adjectives

Class Intermediate level. Middle/High School Students. 70 min class. Teaching Aim For students to be familiar with descriptive words and how they give context and meaning to speech. Learning Objectives: 1. Students will practice using adjectives when talking about themselves. 2. Students will be able to listen to a story and pick out descriptive terminology. 3. Students will be able to use adjectives in order to give directions to another person. Materials and Tools 1. Emotion Sticks 2. Snowman activity Procedure & Time Class Discussion (10 min) First, the teacher will ask the students questions such as: What are adjectives? Why are they used? Students will then provide the instructor with a list of adjectives by calling out words. The instructor will write the words on the board. Emotion Sticks (10 min) Students will select an emotion stick that best represents their current emotion or how they are feeling. Students will take turns sharing with the rest of the class why they chose his or her particular emotion stick and explain any details that pertain to the emotion. Students will share only what they feel comfortable sharing. Open discussion will allow the instructor to assess what students already know and understand about adjectives. This activity will allow students to practice speaking about themselves and become comfortable with sharing information. During this time, students should be using descriptive words to explain their feelings and any events that have contributed to their current emotion. When students are not speaking, they are listening. It will make students feel connected by being Purpose This discussion will have students begin to think about how adjectives give context to what they are talking about.

Practicing Vocabulary (25 min) Students will break into two even groups and form two circles. The inner circle should be facing the outer circle so that partners are facing one another. Students will be given specific topics to explain to their partners such as Describe your perfect day, Describe your family members, Explain how to get from point A to point B.

This activity will allow students to again practice using specific vocabulary but in various ways (describing an object, explaining directions, etc.). The partner of the student speaking is listening and writing down all the descriptive words and terms that he or she hears. Once the student has finished speaking the inner circle will shift one seat and conduct the activity again but with a new topic. All students will have a chance to both speak and take notes. Students will be required to listen for specific terms. Students need to feel comfortable using common terminology and hear how it is used at the correct times in a conversation.

. Snowman Activity (15 min) Students will again be placed in pairs. One Students need to understand how to properly student will be provided with a picture of a give directions through descriptive snowman. The other student is given a blank terminology. piece of paper. Without telling the partner what the picture is, the student with the picture must give verbal direction to their partner to try to have them draw the exact image of the picture. Wrap Up Discussion (10 min) Students will be given time to ask questions regarding adjectives and the activities. The instructor and students will discuss how speaking and listening are linked. Students will have a chance to ask for clarification on what was discussed. Clarity will be provided on adjectives.
