Exploring Circuits

The document provides objectives and instructions for an activity exploring basic electricity concepts. Students will predict whether simple circuits will light a bulb, then test them. They will draw and build both a series and parallel circuit using a battery, wire, two bulbs and switch. For each circuit, students must label the current and voltage at various points to determine how these factors change throughout the circuit. The overall goal is for students to understand the differences between open and closed circuits, and series and parallel circuits.

Exploring Electricity

Objectives: You will be able to tell the difference between an open and closed circuit. You will be able to tell the difference between series and parallel circuits. You will predict whether or not a circuit will work based on its diagram. You will design and build a working circuit. You will determine the current and voltage at various points on a circuit.

If you can not do these things at the end of this activity, then you have not reached the end of this activity.

Part One: Simple circuits. Predict whether or not these circuits will light the bulb. After you make all your predictions, test them.

1. Were any of your predictions incorrect? _____ Why do you think this was? _______ ___________________________________________________________________ 2. Were any of your predictions correct? _____ Why did you make those predictions? ___________________________________________________________________ 3. Do you think that all parts of the bulb conduct electricity? How do you know? ______ ___________________________________________________________________
Part Two: Parallel and series circuits. Using one battery, wire, two bulbs and a switch, design and draw a working series circuit. Once it is drawn and approved, build it and mark whether or not it worked. Repeat for a parallel circuit.

Label on the diagrams what the current (A) and what the voltage (V) are 1) at the negative terminal, 2) before the first bulb, 3) after the first bulb, 4) before the second bulb, 5) after the second bulb, 6) before the positive terminal.
