Example 2 - Lag Compensator (System As in Example 1)

This document provides steps to design a lag compensator for a unity feedback system to improve its steady state error and maintain a 20% overshoot. The steps are: 1) Determine the required phase margin and gain to achieve 20% overshoot for the uncompensated system. 2) Calculate the desired static error constant and gain needed to improve the steady state error tenfold. 3) Design a lag compensator to provide the additional phase lead needed to meet both the overshoot and steady state error requirements.

Example 2 Lag compensator (system as in Example 1) For a unity feedback system with a forward transfer function,

a. Draw the system frequency response for K = 600. b. Then, find the value of K, to yield a closed-loop step response with 20% overshoot. c. Design a lag compensator that will improve the steady state error tenfold, while still operating with 20% overshoot. SOLUTION A. Draw the Bode magnitude and phase plots for K=600. B. i. Determine the required phase margin from the percent overshoot.

ii. iii.

Find the frequency, wPM on the phase diagram that yields the desired phase margin,CD. Change the gain by an amount AB to force magnitude curve to go through 0 dB at wPM. The amount of gain adjustment is the additional gain needed to produce the required phase margin. Draw the new Bode magnitude curve.

Determine the uncompensated systems steady state error and static error constant. Then calculate the desired static error constant and the value of gain K. Draw the new bode plot. Find the phase margin required to achieve 20% overshoot (from B.(i)) and add 10o phase correction. Find the frequency at this phase margin and its corresponding magnitude. Design lag compensator (refer to power point for the steps) Write the lag-compensated systems forward transfer function.
