Sexual assaults on college campuses

November 14, 2012 By: Caroline Niski The U.S. Department of Justice and Bureau of Justice Statistics released a report Nov. 14, analyzing the prevalence of sexual assault among American colleges. University of Cincinnati professor Bonnie Fisher conducted the federally funded study, which reveals nearly three percent of college women experience a completed or attempted rape during the school year. Scene of the crime


The most alarming fact reported is most victims know their assailant. They occur in familiar settings that are well known to both the victim and assailant. The report revealed where the most common danger areas were for rape: o 60 percent in victims residence o 31 percent in living quarters on campus o 10 percent in fraternity houses

Recognizing trouble
Fisher mentions in her report women who are victims of rape have difficulty identifying what happened as a crime. Many women tend to blame themselves and feel responsible for what happened to them.
