Link Weights: Link 2: 0.25kg Link 3: 1.5kg Link 4: 2kg Link 5: 1.3kg Link 6: 7kg

The document provides information about a lab test on kinematics and dynamics of machinery, including link weights and lengths for a shaper mechanism. Students are asked to: 1) Plot torque vs time and torque vs displacement for a crank rotating at 60rpm, ignoring cutting forces. 2) Identify the revolute joint that experiences the maximum load. 3) Obtain graphs of torque vs time and torque vs displacement when a 200N cutting force is applied during 20% of the tool stroke at the center of the tool path.

ME 370 : Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery Lab.

Link weights : link 2 link 3 link 4 link 5 link 6 : 0.25kg : 1.5kg : 2kg : 1.3kg : 7kg

Approx. link lengths: link 2 (AB) : 100mm link 4 (CD) : 500mm link 5 (DE) : 400mm

In the schematic diagram of a shaper mechanism given above, AB is the crank rotating around A. The approximate link lengths and exact link weights are given in the figure. Ignore the cutting force. If the speed of AB is 60rpm, plot the torque to be applied to rotate the crank as a function of (i) time (ii) displacement of shaper. [2 marks] [3 marks]

Identify the revolute joint which experiences maximum load by tabulating the peak load seen at each joint? If you have used any graphs for obtaining these loads then save those graphs. [3 marks] A: D: B: E: C:

Obtain the graphs (i) and (ii) if a work piece of approximately 20% of the tools stroke is placed approximately at the centre of the tools path. The cutting force is 200N and is applied as shown in the figure only when the tool interacts with the work piece. [6 + 6 marks] IMPORTANT : The link lengths given are approximate. You may change the link lengths by small amounts to ensure complete rotation of the crank.
