Lesson Planning Drawing Angles

This lesson plan aims to teach students how to construct angles using a protractor. It begins with matching angles to their classifications and discussing the transition points between acute, obtuse and reflex angles. Students then learn how to use the two scales on a protractor to measure and construct angles to the nearest degree, practicing a range of acute, right and obtuse angles. As an extension, some students may construct polygons using given interior or exterior angles.

Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Constructing Angles Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to construct an acute angle correct to the nearest degree. Most students should be able to construct an acute, right and obtuse angle correct to the nearest degree. Some students should be able to construct any angle correct to the nearest degree. Keywords: acute, obtuse, reflex, angle, protractor Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students match angles with their corresponding classification and size. To follow on from this discuss at what point an acute angle becomes obtuse, and an obtuse becomes reflex. Highlight the importance of a perpendicular angle and straight line when moving from one angle type to another since these are also important properties on a protractor. Development Students will each need a 180 degree protractor and straight edge. Discuss the two scales on the protractor. Emphasise that the protractor measures an amount of turn from 0 when the crosshairs on the protractor are directly above the intersection of the two lines and by following the turn around, the angle is determined. A common misconception is for students to construct a 30 angle as 150 by using the wrong scale. Discuss with the class a suitable range of accuracy typically this is one degree. To measure and construct a reflex angle split it into a straight line (180) and acute angle. Challenge the class to consider an alternative approach. Ideally they will use their powers of intuition to construct an acute or obtuse angle using the difference of 360. Students should be able to work through the third slide independently. Plenary The plenary provides an opportunity for students to apply their learning of angle construction to construct a rhombus. This could form part of a class display. Have pairs of students check each others for peer assessment. Differentiation More able: Students could construct various polygons when given their interior, or even exterior, angles. Less Able Students may need to construct angles that are multiples of ten as this is the scale most often used on protractors. Resources: Mini-whiteboards Protractor Ruler Pencils Erasers
