The report summarizes an investigation into surface imperfections found on a 11m long steel pipe after blasting in preparation for painting. Measurements and inspections found spiral tool marks, pits and cuts, but grinding removed the imperfections without reducing thickness below acceptable limits. As the imperfections did not penetrate more than 12.5% of the thickness, the conclusion was that the pipe meets standards and can proceed to further stages, with extra protective coating recommended during painting.

Material Investigation Report

The Random pipe length Released for blasting & painting against Drawing No: B211-B92SHH-15017 Rev. 0 for Spool No: 2 are 11m in length. There were some surface imperfections after blasting. A detailed study was done on this & the report as follows: Drawing No: B211-B92SHH-15017 Rev. 0, Spool No: 2 Material: Pipe ASTM A333 Grade 6 Seamless pipe. Size & Schedule: 24 inch SCH 60 Length: 11m

Observation:
A spiral tool mark, Pits & cuts were observed after blasting. See Attached Photographs.

The Imperfections were grinded until the disappearance of the imperfection and PT was done to confirm is there any relevant indications present. There were no relevant indications found. See attached photographs.

Thickness measurement was done in the grinded areas. Those readings were under the acceptable limits. See the attached photographs.

Conclusion:
ASME Sec II Part A, SA-333 /SA-333M clearly specifies that Surface imperfections that penetrate more than 12 % of the nominal thickness or encroach on the minimum wall thickness shall be considered as defects. Actual Thickness of the material 24.61 Acceptable range 24.61 to 21.53 Acquired thickness range 25.26 to 23.57 Based on the above said statement & detail investigation the Spiral marks, pits & cuts on the random pipe shall be accepted and proceed to further stages.

Suggestion:
During painting a maximum DFT thickness shall be given to the pipe to avoid further problems.
