Integer Rules

- Adding integers with the same sign results in the sum keeping that sign, while adding integers with different signs means subtracting the numbers and using the sign of the number with the greater absolute value. - Subtracting integers can be done by adding the opposite and keeping the original sign of the number not being subtracted. - Multiplying or dividing integers with the same sign results in a positive answer, while doing so with integers of different signs results in a negative answer.

Integer Rules

Adding Integers

• Same Signs: Add the numbers and keep the same

sign
-7 + -3 = -10 16 + 12 = 28

• Different Signs: Subtract the numbers and use the

sign that has more

-12 + 7 = -5 15 + -8 = 7

Subtracting Integers

• Subtracting = Adding the opposite

-20 − -10 = -20 + 10 = -10
-20 − 10 = -20 + -10 = -30

20 − -10 = 20 + 10 = 30
20 − 10 = 20 + -10 = 10

Multiplying & Dividing Integers

• Same signs = Positive answer

-9 • -9 = 81 -72 ÷ -9 = 8
9 • 9 = 81 72 ÷ 9 = 8

• Different Signs = Negative answer

-6 • 8 = -48 -36 ÷ 4 = -9
6 •-8 = -48 36 ÷ -4 = -9
