The document summarizes the key principles of the Goodbye Couch! Fitness program, which was inspired by the original 5BX program. The program aims to (1) use easy to learn exercises that require minimal equipment and facilities, (2) work the major muscle groups and cardiovascular system in a balanced way, and (3) allow people of different ages and abilities to track their gradual progress over short sessions. The director notes that while the original 5BX program was effective, some exercises carried risks, so they updated the program to make it safer while maintaining exercise quality.

Interesting, practical and effective

Goodbye Couch! Fitness is interesting, practical and effective (as was the famous 5BX program). To achieve this : 1. The exercises had to be easy to learn and few in number as possible. 2. The plan had to result in a basic and balanced level of fitness involved in the four main muscle groups and the hearts and respiratory system. 3. The time required had to be a short as possible. 4. The exercises had to be such that special equipment or facilities were not required. The plan had to provide easy beginning and gradual progression to prevent strain, soreness and discomfort. 5. The plan had to provide different levels of fitness for persons of different age groups. 6. The plan had to provide the user with a method to determine and note their progress from day to day.

Extract from "MR.5BX, Canadian Fitness Pioneer" Author. John J.Jackson Modified. Chris Gurney, Director

"Chris showed methe 5BXprogram in 2009 and I was amazed how simple and effective the program was over a very short time. Once I analysed the program I realised that there were some exercises that had potential risks.

I developed Goodbye Couch! Fitness to get great results in a short time and made the exercises safer - a lot has changed over the past 60 years.

I have been consultingwith Steve Rodda (physiotherapist) and together we went through the original 5BX. Our aim was to make it a safer exercise plan, but without compromising the quality of exercise. The program is now more efficient and more effective than ever before. "
