Variety stores anchor Frisco

Walk up to 508 Frisco and take a look at the TG&Y tiles in the worn sidewalk. Stand there a moment to recall what seemed like limitless opportunities to shop inside that door and next door at McLellans. Clinton 70 grad Kathy Allison remembered, They had everything! I got an allowance, and I was quite a tightwad, but I loved the ceramic horses they had, and I would always go in to drool on those! Kenny Stringer, 73 CHS grad and the son of longtime TG&Y manager Rex Stringer, said, My #1 place downtown was the TG&Y of course. Since Dad was the manager, we spent a lot of time there. He would go in on Sunday, and wed go with him. His office was upstairs, and it was little bitty. Wed go up there and mess around. I remember they would sell caramel apples at Halloween. Mom made them all at home, and Dad would bring them down to sell. Of course the bulk candy and hot roasted nuts were always a hit too. TG&Y opened in Clinton as Gosselins. It was founded by Enoch L Les Gosselin of Cordell who later partnered with Rawdon E. Tomlinson of Frederick and Raymond A Young of Kingfisher to establish what grew to be the nationwide chain of TG&Ys. By the 1980s they had 930 outlets nationwide. Right next door to TG&Y, McLellans was a popular spot, too. Cheri Lou McGee Gastineau recalled, McLellans had a little photo booth where you got four pictures for a quarter. Wed cram people in there6 of us at least, maybe 10. Im sure they were ready for us to leave. They had fish and turtles, too. They had everything. Carla Smith Moores Christmas memories include a McLellans shopping tradition. Mother would take all four of us girls to McLellans. Wed each get one of those little blue baskets, and wed hold them up against us so the others couldnt see what we were getting. Then wed each shop for our sisters, and Mother

some way would keep up with all of us while we shopped and got checked out. I remember one year, when we all got our presents wrapped and under the tree, there were four of those barrel-shaped packages that were obviously doctor kits. Some way, one of us had picked that out for each of us. I dont know how Mother made that happen. Variety stores, whether the old racket store seen in photos of early Clinton or the five and dimes of the 50s, filled the bill for downtown Clinton. They all matched the TG&Y philosophy Have what people want at a price they can afford to pay.

I met my husband working at McLellans in 1962. Rita Cook Scott, Facebook Scott Damrons ponytail! Most of us high school girls had a little bit of a crush on him. Im not sure we ever mentioned that to his daughter Ginger though. And then he sold us our wedding rings. Katie McCauley Miskel Lens was a great high school hangout for us. He would let you come in and just hang out. Jake Lewis would be in there and Skip Heard. Mike Smith was Lens stepson, so he was in there too. It was a great place. Wed go to Janzens Sporting Goods and look at baseball bats and gloves. When we were in high school, theyd let us go down and pick out the bats we wanted. Clarence Janzen worked there, and so did Bob Gilbert. Kenny Stringer I remember when Mom would buy me something at Jeans Childrens Shop, Jean would always give me one of those little birthstone rings. I always thought that was cool. And I remember picking out a sapphire ring at Damrons. I loved it, and I still have it. Julie Burden Menge I worked at McLellans when it was on the north side of Frisco next door to Ross Drug.
