Alienation in the cities: People avoid needless interaction with others and to be absorbed. Gans research. People feel anonymous and then grow aloof and indifferent to other people problems. -Cosmopolites -The singles -The ethnic villagers -The deprived -The Trapped
People Have Fleed the central city for the suburbs. Many manufacturing jobs are located there. Suburbs also have problems commonly associated with the city. Suburban Sprawl: suburbs expand to the countryside.
Disinvestment: Capitalist policies damaged cities and encouraged suburbanization. Redlining. Banks refuse to lend money for mortgages. Only people with money can buy homes. Prices drop and banks refuse to make loans for improvements.
Abandonment: Thousands of housing units are abandoned by landlords each year. Vandalism, high taxes, slow eviction process Landlords remain unable to find buyers, so they collect as much rent as possible and withdraw Properties stop being paid and getting repaired. Abandoned buildings become dangerous sceneries.
Arson: Owners of buildings hire torches to set fire to the businesses . Modern way of refinancing.
Urban violence
Individual violence, group violence: situational group violence, organized group violence, institutionalized group violence. Urban violence: youth gangs. Gangs started as ordinary groups that competed for space. Boys= identity group.
Los Angeles: African American gangs, Chicano gangs, San Salvadoran gangs ( racieal-ethnic diversity).
Walter Milter study. Gang membership: trouble, excitement, toughness, smartness, autonomy and fate. Rejection to middle class values. Supergangs. Local gangs in every urban area around the world.
Urban Violence
Riots Communal riots: race riot, racial.ethnic groups are directing violence against one another. Factors: Discrimination and segregation. Isolation. Destroyed opportunity.
