Assignment 3 Sum and PR
Article Purpose
The article purpose is to look at the barriers relating to
Second, the barriers that lie around technology integration. The simplified most common categories are:
(a) resources (b) knowledge and skills (c) institution (d) attitudes and beliefs (e) assessment (f) subject culture
It was emphasized that the barriers can influence and interact with other barriers.
Third, overcoming the barriers of technology integration. There are 5 main categories:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Have a Shared vision and technology integration plan Overcoming the scarcity of resources Changing attitudes and beliefs Conducting Professional Development Reconsidering Assessment
1.
2.
Have a shared vision and technology integration plan: This is all about having all staff members and those involved on board with what the schools vision is on technology integration (as each school will be different). It is recommended in the article that all those involved make the vision and plan together this way everyone involved understands and accepts the plan. It is also suggested that one greater arching plan is way more efficient and effective then having each person with their own plan. Overcoming the scarcity of resources: Focusing on three categories.
1.
2.
3.
Overcoming lack of technology: Three ways to overcome this. One, create mini computer setups in all classrooms and use a cheaper computer system. Two, start with technology integration in one or two subjection areas. Third, use laptops with wireless connections instead of building expensive computer rooms. Overcoming lack of access to technology: Two ways to overcome this. One, have several in the classroom instead of in a computer room. Second, put students in groups and then rotate them through the computers. Overcoming lack of time: Three ways to overcome this. One, change time table. Second, reduce class loads for teachers. Third, teachers should collaborate to create technology-integrated lesson plans and materials.
3.
Changing attitudes and beliefs: There are 4 factors that have to be considered when changing attitudes and beliefs
1. 2. 3. 4.
What are the teacher's current knowledge and skills? What is their subject culture? How do they assess? Is there support throughout the institution?
If these 4 factors are addressed it makes it a lot easier for staff and support to provide help.
4.
5.
Providing Professional Development: By providing professional development you are providing your staff with the knowledge and skills they need. Especially, by providing specific sessions that address teacher issues with integrating technology. PD sessions also allow for teachers to collaborate and share their ideas on how to integrate technology. Reconsidering Assessment: It is important to consider how the use of technology can meet the demands of standardsbased accountability. When assessing during the use of technology I would incorporate it with a project this way I can assess the project and content and not just the technology.
Personal Reflection
I believe that technology integration is SOOOO important. And that if we dont use it the students will never learn how to respect it and use it in a professional manner. In my experience in PSI and PSII technology was integrated just about in every class. It was really amazing to be with teachers that tried their best in incorporating technology. Even though they had plenty of challenges when it came to technology integration. The major problem I noticed was the lack of resources therefore the lack of one to one ratio of students to computers. A second major problem was the servers and internet was SOOO slow. In PSII half the students would just jump on their phones and do a quick research and continue on with their work. As for me in both PSI and PSII I always used whatever I could get my hands on. Some days it was the laptop carts or the computer lab, or the Ipads. Lots of days it was the interactive SMART Board. But either way, I would use it. In PSII I put a lot of trust into my students in letting them use their own devices. This turned out to be a very useful and respectful tool. It help the students and I to develop a trusting fun relationship. They all thought it was great that they could finally just use their 3G Phones instead of the Crappy computers with S&$#* Internet . I strongly believe in the integration of technology into the classroom and I look forward to creating fun curriculum connecting activities for my students.
