Lect-12 2013

This document summarizes a lecture on box girder bridges. Box girders are suitable for medium span bridges from 45-100 meters due to their large torsional stiffness and simpler erection. A box girder consists of upper and lower flanges connected by transverse web plates. The behavior of box girders under bending is described, including shear lag effects which cause non-uniform stress distributions that require using an effective reduced flange width for design. Local buckling of the compression flange and web due to bending and shear is also discussed.

Why Box Girder

Suitable for medium span bridges (45100 m) Large torsional stiffness. Possibility for wider flanges. Simpler to erect less LTB problems.

Is the stress distribution uniform? NO

Shear Lag

Is the distorsion of the flange in its own plane due to the restraint of the web

Shear Lag
How do we account for the shear lag? Use an effective (reduced) flange width. The reduction is a function of the span (L) to width (b) ratio of the box. Fortunately, for normal range of L/b ratios, the increase in peak stress is in the range of 10% to 20%.
