Simon Says for Locomotor Skills

Grade Level: K-3 (or any level learning locomotor skills) Materials: None Outline: Engage in Review of last week o Ask if they can remember what skills we learned last week? And give examples. Hop: One foot take off same foot landing Jump: Two foot take off two foot landing Gallop: Step together moving forward (sagittal plane) Shuffle: step together moving sideways (frontal plane) Skip: alternating step, hop movement Leap: One foot take off opposite foot landing with extended flight period Locomotor motor skills in which the feet move the body from one place to another

o What kind of skills were these? o Have students stand up and practice each one in place. o Can someone think of something that would not be a locomotor skill? What are some examples? Introduce review game o We are going to play Simon Says locomotor style How to Play: 1. Every time I say Simon Says you do the action. BUT do not do the action if it is NOT a locomotor skill. Example: Simon says sit (I said Simon says but sit is not a locomotor skill so you should not do the action) 2. If I say an action and Simon Says is not said before it then dont do the action, even if it is a locomotor skill Example: Gallop (Galloping is a locomotor skill but since I did not Simon says before the skill you shouldnt do the action) 3. Finally, if you do the Simon Says locomotor action but you do the action wrong, that counts as wrong and you should sit down. Example: If I say Simon Says hop and you jump o If you make a mistake and do an action when you should not then sit down in your seat. o For the sake of space and safety, we will not be using the locomotor skill running. o We will be moving in a zig-zag pattern through the desks.

Have each row face a different direction. Watch out for the person in front of you If you need a quick beginning pace to leap make sure you have enough room before doing so.

o ** Remind students to stay safe while playing

o When everyone is sitting the game is over! I know you will all do great! o Does anyone have any questions? When game is over ask students how they think it went o Do you feel like you understand the locomotor skill? o What skill are you still unsure about?
