Brief synopsis on how to harmonize chord progressions and melodies, based on different scales:

key: lower case numerals= minor lower case with *= either whole diminished or half diminished uppercase= major uppercase with + = augmented

major scale's chord formula: I ii iii IV V vi vii* C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, B half diminished

natural minor scale's chord formula, which is hardly ever used:

i ii* III iv v VI VII A minor, B half diminished, C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major

harmonic minor chord formula, which is the most used minor formula: i ii* III+ iv V VI #vii* A minor, B half diminished, C augmented, D minor, E major, F major, G# whole diminished

Melodic minor scale's chord formula, which is really never used at all: i ii III+ IV V #vi* #vii* A minor, B minor, C augmented, D major, E major, F# half diminished, G# whole diminished

Phrygian parallel: i bII bIII iv v* bVI bvii C minor, Db major7th, Eb dominant7th, F minor, G half diminished, Ab major7th, Bb minor
