Chapter 1 Information Sheet

Important Vocabulary: observing, inferring, predicting, hypothesis, variable,

data, scientific theory, energy, atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, matter, topography, elevation, relief, scale, degree, latitude, longitude

Important Concepts:
1. Science is a way of learning about the natural world and the knowledge gained through the process. Scientists use their 5 senses to observe, infer logical guesses, and predict into the future. Earth Science includes geology, meteorology, and environmental science. (p7, 18) 2. Scientists use their inquiry skills to pose a question, infer a hypothesis, and design experiments. During an experiment, ideally 1 variable is tested, data is collected and analyzed, and conclusions are drawn. Scientists should also share their results with others. (p8-11) 3. A scientific theory is a well tested concept that is supported by many successful experiments. A scientific law describes a well tested pattern without providing an explanation. (p10) 4. The Earth has 3 sphere on its surface: atmosphere (gasses), hydrosphere (water), lithosphere (rocks), and biosphere (life). (p14-15) 5. Matter is all the atoms in the universe. The sun radiates energy to our planet which allows us to do work and change to matter. Energy can move 3 ways: within an object, by waves or by heat flow. (p14, 16-17) 6. Topography describes the surface and shape of the lithosphere. Elevation describes the height above sea level. Relief is the steepness of the area. Landforms such as plains, mountains, and plateaus differ in relief and elevation. (p21-23) 7. A map is a flat model of the Earths surface. Maps use symbols and scale to show topography. Scale compares the distance on a map to the actual distance. Since the Earth is round, scientists use the geometry of a circle to divide up the surface into degrees of latitude and longitude. (p24-26) 8. Topographic maps show surface features using contour lines. The closer the lines, the higher the relief. The distance between each line shows elevation. (p28-31) 9. Scientists stay safe while experimenting by carefully preparing before labs, following safety guidelines, and cleaning up completely. If an accident does occur, notify your teacher immediately. (p34-37) Practice Due Test Due:
