Cyclone Tracking Map

This document provides information and advice for tracking and preparing for cyclones, including: - Assembling an emergency kit with supplies like a radio, batteries, food, water before cyclone season. - A Cyclone Watch is issued 48 hours before a cyclone is predicted to affect an area, while a Warning is issued 24 hours before gale force winds are expected. - Cyclone positions and tracks can be plotted on a map using longitude and latitude readings provided in Warnings. - Regular updates on cyclones will be provided by local radio stations or online at bom.gov.au.

cycloneWARNING
When an Advice is issued, the position of the cyclone is given both a longitude and latitude reading as a 16point compass bearing. To plot the cyclones route yourself, use the longitude (vertical lines) and latitude (horizontal lines) readingsandmarkthemonthemap. *Remember that readings are given for the eye of the cyclone, that is the centre. Gale force winds may be experienced on the coast many hours and hundreds of kilometresaheadofthecyclonescentre. ACycloneWarningisissuedassoonasgalesor strongerwindsareexpectedtoaffectcoastalor islandcommunitieswithin24hours.Forecasts ofheavyrainfall,floodingandabnormallyhigh tidesareincludedwherenecessary.ACyclone Warningisrenewedeverythreehours,with hourlywarningsissuedifthecyclonemoves closertothecoastandposesamajorthreat.
