Reg. No. :| B.E/B.Tech. DEGREE EXAMINATION, APRIL/MAY 2008. Sixth Semester (Regulation 2004) Electronics and Communication Engineering CS 1302 — COMPUTER NETWORKS (Common to B.E. (Part-Time) Fifth Semester Regulation 2005) ‘Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL questions. PART A — (10 x 2 = 20 marks) Determine the total number of links needed for N nodes connected as (a) Mesh topology (b) Star topology (c) Ring topology. What is the purpose of RS-232 and what is the function of null modem? In stop-and-wait ARQ, what happens if a Negative Acknowledgment (NAK) is lost in transit? Why is there no need for such NAKs to be numbered? In HDLC, what does each of the following received bit patterns represent? (a) 0111111010101010 (b) 011111101111010101110111... What is the main purpose of the second ring in the FDDI protocol? Give a simple example of the count-to-infinity problem. What is a class B IP address? How many class B subnets can there be? How many hosts per class B subnet can there be? . 10. le 12, What is the use of integrated services? Why do HTTP, FTP, SMTP and POPS run on top of TCP rather than on UDP? In the database of DNS servers, what is the difference between “Type @) (b) (a) (b) A’ and ‘Type = MX’ resource records? PART B — (5 x 16 = 80 marks) What is the use of layered architecture? Describe briefly the OSI layers that are responsible for the following? (i) Determining the best path to route packets. ©) (ii) Providing end-to-end communications with reliable service. (6) (iii) Providing node-to-node communications with reliable service. (4) Or Explain briefly the different types of guided and unguided transmission media used for data transmission. (16) Consider a Token Ring network with ring latency D, i.e., the total ring propagation delay, and the link bandwidth is R. Assume that there are N stations in the network placed equally apart. Assuming each station, when having the token, will transmit one packet with field length L (this also implies that each station always has packets for transmission). Please calculate the utilization for the following cases. (i) When L/R D, and under the Immediate Token Release, (iii) When L/R D, and-under the Delayed Token Release. (16) Or What is DAB? Explain the components, frame format and the protocol used by DAB to access different formats of data. Also describe how DAB is used for data broadcasting and to access high speed internet. ae) . 2 T3179 13. (a) Consider a network using the link state algorithm and consider that router A receives the following link state packets from other routers in the network. LSP from node Neighbor node (link cost) B A(4) c(8) Dis) £@) Cc A() Bs) DQ) E(2) D B(t5) c(t) E(t) E A(i6) B6) c(2) Do) Construct the network topology from this table. From the topology you have constructed, use Dijkstra’s algorithm to compute the shortest path from node A to all other nodes in the network. (16) Or (b) Consider the following network with three hosts and one router. The IP addresses of the different interfaces in the network are indicated on the figure. Assume that the MAC address of node A is 00:02:98:FF:CD:00 and that its ARP table is initially empty. Given that B MAC address is 00:02:98:FF:CD:02, describe all the steps involved if A wants to send an IP datagram to B and to C. Show the headers of all frames transmitted. 16) 223.1.1.4 2231.24 223.1.1.3 14. (a) What is meant by fast retransmit of TCP protocol? When is fast retransmit used? What is the reason for using fast retransmit? (16) Or (b) In the TCP congestion control algorithm we maintain the invariant that LastByteSent-LaseByteAcked < congwin e 3 T3179
