Channel Mapping in UMTS

Logical channels are mapped to transport channels, which are then mapped to physical channels in UMTS. The mapping between logical and transport channels can be flexible. A transport channel is always mapped to one physical channel according to the channel mapping rules defined in the protocol. The document then describes typical channel configurations for S-CCPCH, PRACH, DCH, HS-DSCH, and E-DCH in UMTS networks.

Channel Mapping in UMTS

The rules for channel mapping are as follows: Channel Data Rule

Logical channels are mapped onto transport channels. Transport channels are mapped onto physical channels. The mapping between some transport channels and logical channels is not fixed.

One transport channel is mapped onto only one physical channel. The mapping between the channels defined by the protocols. the blue arrows denote the downlink data transmission, and the green arrows denote the uplink data transmission.

The BCCH, CCCH logical channel can be mapped onto HS-DSCH transport channel only when the UE is in the enhanced CELL_FACH. For detailed information about the enhanced CELL_FACH state Typical Channel Configuration This section describes the typical configurations of the S-CCPCH, PRACH, DCH, HS-DSCH, and E-DCH.

S-CCPCH Configuration

A cell must be configured with the PCH and FACH. For Huawei products, a cell is configured with one S-CCPCH by default. The S-CCPCH carries one PCH, one FACH #0 carrying signaling, and one FACH #1 carrying service data.

PRACH Configuration

One PRACH carries only one RACH. The RACH carries all the uplink signaling and service data.

DCH Configuration

For dedicated channels, the radio bearers that carry signaling and the radio bearers that carry service data are separately mapped onto different transport channels.

HS-DSCH Configuration

After HSDPA is adopted, signaling and service data are carried on the HS-DSCH.

E-DCH Configuration

After HSUPA is adopted, signaling and service data are carried on the E-DCH.
