DEFINITION OF COTTAGE AND SMALL INDUSTRIES:A cottage industry is a small business that is run from someone's home, especially

one that involves a craft such as knitting or pottery. NOUNBookbinding is largely a cottage industry. the The term cottage industry once applied to manufacturing that took place in peoples homes, prior to industrial revolution. For example, farmers might take in extra sewing or make cloth, which was then sold to a larger retailer, in order to earn a few extra dollars during the slow months of winter. Today, the manufacturing of goods is largely done in big manufacturing plants, eliminating the individual textiles or sewing worker at home. A few of these smallbusinesses still exist, like home assembly or stuffing envelopes. Most often, todays cottageindustries involve using advanced technology to work from home, via fax, Internet and telephone. An industry where the creation of products and services is home-based, rather than factory-based. While products and services created by cottage industry are often unique and distinctive given the fact that they are usually not mass-produced, producers in this sector often face numerous disadvantages when trying to competewith much larger factorybased companies.

Small Scale Industry :In the small scale industry the male members of the family along with hired labour work together. In small industries, electric power and improved machines are mostly used in subcontinental the firm employing less than 10 person are classified as small. In subcontinental Carpet industry , poultry farming, bee keeping, tailoring and furniture making is included in the cottage and small industry."By small-scale industries we understand industries where power is used and where the number of workers does not exceed 50 and the capital invested is less than Rs. 30,000."
