Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2011).

Brief Description of Evidence:


During the fall 2012 semester as part of my ECED 243 course, I used information from lecture and course materials and Howard Gardners theory of Multiple Intelligences to create an activity for each of Gardners eight intelligences that would reflect and promote the development of each aspect of intelligence all within an appropriate theme for use with three to five year olds. The theme of the activities was chosen based on interests of the children in a 3- to 5-year old mixed age preschool class.

Analysis of What I Learned:


I learned to use my knowledge of the theory of Multiple Intelligences and Indianas Foundations to the Academic Standards for young Children to develop, implement and evaluate meaningful curriculum to promote learning for all types of learners in order to promote positive development for every child.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:


Planning this curriculum shows my understanding and ability to use my knowledge of childrens physical, emotional, social and cognitive development to create meaningful curriculum that will promote learning in language, literacy, math, science, and social studies (across academic or content disciplines) ensuring positive development for all learners.
