Advanced Ceramics
The other types are the bulk. But the advanced ceramics are the future specially for the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. They are utilized in optical fiber communications systems, in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), as ball bearings, and in applications of piezoelectric behavior of a number of ceramic materials.
Piezoelectric Ceramics
A few ceramic materials as well as some polymers exhibit the unusual phenomenon of piezoelectricity ( an electric field or voltage) is induced in the ceramic crystal when a mechanical strain is imposed on it. The inverse piezoelectric effect is also displayed by this group of materials. They may be utilized as transducers between electrical and mechanical energies. One of the early uses was the underwater sonar ( a piezoelectric crystal is caused to oscillate by an electric signal which produces high frequency mechanical vibrations and upon encountering an object these signals are reflected back and another piezoelectric material receives it and converts it back into an electric signal) Some of these materials are barium titanate, lead zirconate-titanate, lead titanate, and sodium-potassium niobate.
Optical Fibers It is made of high purity silica. It must be free of even minute levels of contaminants and other defects that absorbs, scatter a light beam.
Ceramic Ball Bearings The use of silicon nitride balls in ball bearing gives higher resistance to wear and corrosion. It is light weight and is called hybrid bearing.
