SELECTING LITERARY TEXTS

TOPIC 5 DED3043 TEACHING OF LITERATURE IN ESL

Introduction
For literature to succeed in the ESL classroom, student must be presented with texts that make sense to him, suits his taste and which are varied and lively. Should be able to choose the right story, poem or play for the right classroom.

Considerations
1. The student Background Stage of development Interest 2. The text Content Language Text presentation 3. The teacher

The student
Involves knowing: Students background Stage of linguistic knowledge Cognitive and social development Interests

a) Background Immediate environment. Should also expose to foreign literary texts. Start with familiar themes and move to unfamiliar ones.

b) Stage of development Based on age most of the time. Consider whether the text will: Play on childs imagination. Exploit curiosity. Make him understand human motives and circumstances.

c) Interest Ask students their reading interest. Find out their hobbies, favourite TV programmes, pets, sports, etc.

2. The text
a) Content Interesting enough to hook reader. Characters should be believable. b) Language Must be accessible. Check for archaic words, special registers. Consider figurative use of language. Also language complexity- words, structure.

c) Text presentation Consider: Physical features Length Size of print Illustrations

3. The teacher
Should be interested in the text- would be communicated to the students through tone of voice, facial expression, comments made.
