Classroom Rules and Policies

Classroom Expectations
Our classroom is a place of business, and you are expected to act professional and respectful. In doing so please work hard to fulfill the following expectations: Come to class with your brain on and ready to work. Ask questions of your study teammates. Questioning promotes learning. Raise your hand to speak. Work on math the entire period. There is a lot to learn and it can only be done if you do it. Participate in daily activities. Maintain a clean and pleasant classroom environment.

Behavioral Standards and Consequences

These rules are to insure a positive, well-managed classroom where students are free from disruption and distraction. Students that violate these rules are interfering with my teaching and other students learning. In order to assure a stress-free learning environment, the following standards are expected: Respect: Treat your teacher, yourself, fellow students, and property with respect. Be Prepared: Come to class prepared with all materials and supplies, including assignments. Attendance: Be in your seat, ready to work, when the final bell rings. Start the Bellwork and correct your assignment. Ipod/Phone: Put away any electronic device including headphones/earbuds before you enter the room. They will be confiscated on sight! Food/Beverages: Only plastic beverage bottles are allowed in the classroom. Snacks are allowed only if the room remains tidy. Bathroom Use: You need to ask permission. Sign out and sign back in so I know where you are at all times. Only one student may be out of the classroom at a time so please return promptly. If you consistently abuse the bathroom pass, we will discuss a solution. We are a G-rated class. Name-calling, put-downs, insults, and profanity will not be tolerated. Students who fail to use appropriate language and treat others with respect will report to me after school or will be referred to the office. Dress code will also be enforced, and gang related behavior will not be tolerated. Consequences include (1) warning, (2) in-class discipline (writing standards, time-out, talk with the teacher), (3) lunch or after school detention, (4) parent notification, (5) referral to office, and an "N" or "U" for your citizenship grade. Decreased privileges will occur as appropriate. This may include a seat change, removal from certain activities, or being kept after class. Absences Due to the nature of this course and its dependence on participation, consistent attendance is very important to a students success in this class. New material is presented daily, which is crucial in order to move on. If you are absent: Check the Absent Bin for handouts you may have missed All assignments are due the day you return. It is your responsibility to get at least two classmates' phone numbers to get any assignments. Moreover, the assignment page on the class website is updated daily. Quizzes cannot be made up. Since the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped, a score of zero from a missed quiz will be dropped. Tests will be taken the day you return to class.

Honesty and Cheating

Cheating/Copying/Borrowing or anything along these lines is not acceptable. Students who copy answers and students who let others copy will receive a 0 on the assignment or test. Students may also be sent to the office for further disciplinary actions. During a test, there is no talking. If you have a concern about what the question is asking or cant read something, ask me not your neighbor. Do not share any materials during a test. Have your own supplies on your desk before the test begins. Grade all work correctly. Always grade using a red pen. Be sure you mark incorrect answers as incorrect and correct as correct. Do not change any answer during grading. Add the total points earned and write the score on the paper. If grading is done incorrectly or inappropriately, a loss of points and possibly a 0 on the assignment/quiz/test will occur. Be sure to double-check your work!!

Dont give me a reason to think you are cheating and I wont think you are. If you fail to follow any test-taking rules, you will earn a zero on the test or quiz, which will result in a lowered grade at the semester. The penalty is too costly for not following these simple, fair rules.

Materials Needed for Class

You must have these materials at every class session: ___ Daily Planner This should plan your life! It should not be math only! Work on managing your time! ___ Textbook This will be issued to you and must be returned in the same condition. ___ Red pen You will receive no credit when you dont have your own red pen to grade. . ___ Hi-liters (yellow) All answers on homework and tests are to be hi-lited to receive credit. ___ Binder (1 inch or larger) ___ 5 dividers ___ Lined Paper ___ Graph Paper ___ Ruler A 12 inch heavy-duty ruler with centimeters. Wood or plastic. ___ Pencils Mechanical is OK, just have extra lead and erasers. Keep a backup pencil handy. ___ Calculator A TI 30 or 34 is durable and not too costly. Graphing Calculators will be provided during class ***Please talk to me if you need any of these supplies.

Assignment Policy
To help ensure your success, follow these Assignment Policies and Procedures 1. Assignments will be given daily, and they will be checked at the start of the next day. Work is checked for accuracy and completeness. An assignment sheet is due at the end of each chapter. 2. Do all work in pencil and be sure to show your work. Remember to highlight your answers. 3. Graphs are done on graph paper, otherwise no credit. 4. Use the answer keys provided by your teacher to check your work 5. If you are having trouble completing assignments, use these procedures: Have a study-buddy from class you can call who may be able to help you over the rough spot. Start each problem and go as far as you can. When you get stuck on a problem, review your resources or class notes, and look back to previous work for examples and hints before you quit that problem. Write an explanation about what you did and did not understand by any problem you were unable to complete. During assignment check, be sure to tell your teacher which problem(s) you were unable to understand. Dont be shywe have time each day to clear up your confusion. You can come after school for individual help and/or attending tutoring.

Guidelines For Partners

Since the majority of our class work is done in two or four person teams, smooth-functioning teams are essential to your success. I have some guidelines that must be followed. Failure to comply will result in all members losing points and/or members will complete the assignment alone. 1. YOU are responsible for your behavior. No one has the right to interfere with anothers right to learn. 2. YOU must help your partner if s/he asks. Dont give the answerexplain your work and method. 3. You may ask the teacher for help only when ALL members of the TEAM have the same question. 4. YOU must use 12-INCH voices. Others must not hear your voice outside of your group.

Student SupportExtra Help

I will be glad to meet with you after school. If you are starting to feel lost or confused, talk to me! I want you to succeed in our class, and tutoring will help you. Be proactive and sign up for homework help and/or tutoring in the library BEFORE you are behind.

Parental CommunicationMonitoring Student Progress

Parents will receive formal progress reports at the 6th and 12th week, and a report card at the end of the semester. Parents can request this report by calling the school office and leaving me a message or sending me an email. Students can ask for a report after class. Create Success for Yourself Remember this: Your most important job is to prepare for your future. Keep all your options open by maintaining good grades and practicing self-control and discipline. Getting poor grades limits your future opportunities. Use your time carefully, and keep to your goals.
