Isl Week 3: Nur Azirah Binti Zakaria Nurulasida Binti Daud Raihanah Binti Sahari (Pismp MT 1 Sem 5)

1. The document discusses solving systems of linear equations to determine possible flows in a network of water pipes. It provides an example of a three pipe system with measured flows and sets up the equations to solve for the possible flow rates through each pipe. 2. It then considers restrictions on one of the pipe flows and solves for the resulting flows in the other pipes. It also determines the minimum and maximum possible flows through each pipe. 3. It briefly discusses how negative flow in the system would mean water flowing backwards in the pipes.

ISL WEEK 3

Nur Azirah Binti Zakaria Nurulasida Binti Daud Raihanah Binti Sahari (PISMP MT 1 SEM 5)

Exercises 2.4 (David Pole page 113)

1. Suppose that, in Example 2.27, 400 units of food A, 600 units of C are placed in the test tube each day and the data on daily food consumption by the bacteria (in units per day) are as shown in Table 2.4. How many bacteria of each strain can coexist in the test tube and consume all of the food?

Table 2.4

Bacteria Strain I

Bacteria Strain II

Bacteria Strain III 0

Food A

Food B

Food C

Solution :
x + 2y = 400 2x + y + z = 600 x + y + 2z = 600

So, the bacteria that can coexist in the test tube and consume all of the food is 160 for strain I, 120 for strain II and 160 for strain III.

15) Figure 2.18 shows a network of water pipes with flows measured in liters per minute. a) Set up and solve a system of linear equations to find the possible flows. f1 + f2 = 20 f2 + 10 = f3 f1 + f3 = 30 in term of x,y,z x + y = 20 -y + z = 10 x + z = 30

f1 + f2 = 20 , f1 = 20 f2 f2 f3 = -10 , f2 = f3 -10 f1 = 20 (f3 10) = 20 f3 +10 = 30 f3

Let f3 = s f1 = 30 s f2 = s 10 f3 = s

b) If the flow through AB is restricted to 5 L/min, what will the flows through the other two branches be? If s = 5, f1 = 30 5 = 25 f2 = 5 10 = -5 f3 = 5

c) What are the minimum and maximum possible flows through each branch? 0 s 10 20 f1 30 0 f2 10 0 f3 10

d) We have been assuming that flow is always positive. What would negative flow mean, assuming we allowed it? Give an illustration for this example. Negative flow because water director flow to the left of backward.
