Title: Making Casein Plastic: Date: Partners

The document outlines an experiment to create casein plastic from milk and white vinegar. It describes heating milk to 50 degrees Celsius, adding vinegar dropwise while stirring, and filtering out the solid curds to be molded into a plastic shape. A future experiment is proposed to test the plastic's solubility by breaking it into pieces and observing any changes when placed in water at different temperatures, including heating a piece to 80 degrees Celsius to test its solidity when reheated.

Title: Making Casein Plastic

Date: 26th August 2013 Partners: Stefan Zhang, Madeleine Lam, Tony Ding Introduction:

Aim: To create a casein plastic using milk and white vinegar Hypothesis:
The plastic formed from the milk and vinegar solution. The result of the solids will be a thermoplastic and can be reshaped when heated.

Equipment:
Safety glasses White vinegar Glass rod Thermometer Bunsen burner Matches 100 mL of milk 250 mL beaker 250 mL conical flask Filter paper and funnel Heatproof mat Tripod and gauze mat

Method:
1) Pour the milk into the 250 mL beaker and warm it slowly to 50oC. 2) Remove from the heat and add about 5 mL of vinegar drop by drop, stirring carefully with the glass rod. The milk will separate into curds (solid) and whey (liquid). 3) Filter the curds and whey. Discard the liquid (filtrate) and mould the solid curds into a shape with your fingers. 4) Filter the curds and whey. Discard the liquid (filtrate) and mould the solid curds into a shape with your fingers.

Discussion:
Aim: To test its solubility, the plastic piece can be altered in shape,
such as breaking it into pieces or as a single piece, and test in them in different temperatures of water.

Hypothesis: Equipment:
Knife Bunsen Burner Retort Stand Water Tripod Gauze Mat Beaker Thermometer

Boss Head Stirring Rod

Heatproof mat Casein Plastic

Method:
1) Break up the plastic into 3 different sizes 2) Place pieces into a beaker of water and observe any changes. 3) Heat the plastic to 80oC and use a stirring rod to test the solidity of the plastic
