Reasons for Using Literature in ESL classroom


1. Motivating material Expose to variety of themes and uses of language. Suspense in unraveling plot of novels. Bring out emotional responses.

2. Access to Cultural background. Expose to rich and fascinating diversities of the world. Wide range of cultures. Aware of social, political and historical events.

3. Encouraging language acquisition. Limited access to spoken language written language becomes primary source for stimulating acquisition. Should encourage extensive reading.

4. Expanding students language awareness. Language used in poetry become sensitive to specific stylistic effects in literary work. Discover more generalisable features of language.

5. Developing students interpretive abilities. Abilities to infer meaning and to make interpretations. Literary texts rich in multiple levels of meaning.

6. Educating the whole person. Literature helps to stimulate students imagination, develop critical abilities, and increase emotional awareness.
