V05b - Intro To Deck-Based Process Plant - 1206

Floating production technology involves the use of deck-based production plants and floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels. FPSOs have complex processing systems to separate oil, gas, and water and compress gas for storage and offloading. Key factors in the design of an FPSO's processing systems include the composition of reservoir fluids, product specifications, vessel motions from weather, the layout within space constraints, and processing capacity which has increased from 15,000 to 200,000 barrels of oil per day. Examples of FPSOs like the Greater Plutonio and Falcon illustrate their complex topside layouts and equipment used in production and processing.

Deck-based Production Plants

Specialist Diploma in Marine & Offshore Technology

Design of a Processing Facility

A key to design of a Processing Facility

is the knowledge and understanding of Composition (chemistry) and physical properties of the reservoir fluids to be produced (both on start-up and with time) the specification of the product to be produced.

Influences on Processing Capability

Vessel Motions

Weather
Layout Processing Capacity

Vessel Motion
Vessel motion affect the operation of process systems on board, e.g. the separator units that operate by spraying rotating equipment

Weather
Floating installations are affected by weather

Under extreme weather conditions, production may have to be shut down as a safety measure
Offloading by shuttle tanker may be interrupted by extreme weather

Layout
Limited deck area on FPS will affect layout Need for clear separation of hazardous and benign systems

Accommodation and critical functions to be away from hazardous locations Multi-deck arrangement may be necessary for semi, SPAR or TLP

Processing Capability
Early FPSO process 15,000 bopd, now up to 200,000 bopd.

Storage of processed crude on board can reach 2,000,000 barrels on a single FPSO
The trend is towards deeper waters, larger capacities facilitated by improved technology

Example - Greater Plutonio FPSO

Greater Plutonio FPSO

The FPSO was built by HHI in South Korea. The topsides processing system was designed by KBR in the UK with support from other KBR offices, and in conjunction with BP. Accommodation, control room, helideck and lifeboats are forward.
