School Rules
The following rules will need explanation through the use of gesture, mime etc. This sheet should be used as part of a pupils induction and the main teaching objective is the introduction of must and must not.
These are the school rules at Newtown High: Never run in the corridors Switch off mobile phones Do not wear make-up Do not wear trainers Always speak politely to teachers Come to school on time Do your homework Do not chew gum Do not wear jewellery
Now put the rules into two lists: you must and you must not Must
You must switch .
Must not
Now write some rules from your school in your own language Must Must not
19
take turns to be teacher! Do this as primarily as an speaking and listening exercise & to establish understanding of meaning. Pupils who can read and write some English can tick the instructions they understand & underline the instructions they have heard today.
Dont run! Dont push! Dont talk! Dont forget! Dont chew gum! Put it in the bin. Stop talking. Stop writing. Put your pens down. Put the chairs up on the table. Put your hands up. Put your coats on the pegs. Put your coat on your chair. Log on. Log off. Sign in. Sign out. Come here!
Mr Brown said, Look at me. Mrs Green said, Open your books. Talk about what teachers have said to you today.
(This will also help pupils know the names of their teachers.)

Teach vocabulary from other topics to learn phrases, for example, food, using a well illustrated cookery book. Food is a good topic to extend, especially if the pupil is studying Food technology. A research project on food and recipes from the pupils country could result in a booklet or display. Some pupils need to learn categories of food such as meat, fruit, vegetables and games can be devised to group words under these headings.
21
Word searches can be made for free using - ww.teach-nology.com Other topics are school subjects, seasons, music, TV programmes. Extension work includes because I dont like winter because its cold.
22
NOTES FOR TEACHERS You will need to provide a current calendar to help pupils with these exercises. Before using these worksheets with your students, you will need to teach them numbers from 1-31 (cardinal and ordinal), the days of the week and the months of the year. This can be done orally, though it is a good idea to write them down too. Chant the numbers, try saying them backwards, even numbers, odd numbers, simple sums. Play bingo Chant the days and months rhythmically to help the students learn them. Play games such as asking which day/month comes before/after another. Try saying the days/months backwards. Play pairs in small groups using the upper and lower case pairs of cards. Look at the calendar and ask questions such as, How many Mondays are there in September? or What day is 29th April? You will also need to teach the meaning of the other key words: season, spring, summer, autumn, winter second, minute, hour, day, week, fortnight, month, year time, watch, clock. date, calendar, birthday, holiday The worksheets can be used in any order (apart from the first page with the key words), though they are roughly numbered in order of difficulty. Although the wordsearches are easy, they should not be used until the students are familiar with the meanings of the words.
