the FIRST GRADE NEWS


MRS. MOHRS CLASS

Our reading strategy of the month is: Connections


Connections: As your child reads with you, have them look for connections in the story. These can be text to self (they nd something similar in the story that relates to them), text to text (similarities between two books), and text to world (similarities to something in the world).

It is hard for me to believe how fast these rst three weeks have gone! I will ofcially be on my maternity leave beginning on Monday. Julie Colquhoun will be taking over for me. She has been so wonderful to shadow me over these last few weeks, that I am condent it will be a smooth transition for everyone. We have planned to do Back to School Night and Fall Conferences together, so I will see everyone in a few weeks.

3 Back to School Night (5:30-7:00)

Theme Basket

Please remember our Back to School night is Thursday, October 3 from 5:30-7. This is a time for families to come and tour the school. One of the activities that will be happening at this time is our Theme Basket rafe. The classroom theme is Baking with Kids. We are asking for donations of items for baking: cake/cookie/brownie mixes, cupcake holders, baking pans, sprinkles, decorations, frosting, etc. If you would like to add materials for our basket, please send them in by Wednesday, October 2.

Class Directory

Remember if you do not want to have your name, childs name, address, phone, and emails (those that were given on the talk-in paperwork) listed in our class directory, please let me know ASAP. Otherwise, they will be going home in the BEE books on Friday.

Classroom Volunteers

We are still planning on having volunteers beginning in mid-October. I will be in contact with those that signed up at talk-ins later this week about the anticipated start date.

Take-Home Book Update

We are still in the middle of assessing student reading levels, therefore we have not started sending home take-home books in your childs book bag. Once we have assessed everyone, we will begin sending home nightly books. Our hope is to begin these the week of October 7.

Waterbottles

In an effort to keep kids hydrated during the day, please feel free to send in a waterbottle for your child to keep at their seats.

We ofcially had our rst full week of homework. Thank you for all your support at home. A question was asked regarding the weekly sight words that are listed on our class website. Each week the students are given 2-3 words that we are working on in addition to their word sort. Once we have practiced these in the classroom, we call them no excuse words. Meaning we hope they are spelled correctly in their writing. Our ultimate goal is for the kids to be able to spell these words accurately in their writing by the end of the school year. As your child is writing at home, please help support them in spelling these words accurately if we have studied them in the classroom. The dates are a week off on the website, and will be updated soon to reect our current schedule.
