This progress report summarizes the preliminary design of a shell and tube cooler to reduce the temperature of a reactor effluent from 240°C to 130°C using river water at 23°C. Key specifications and assumptions are provided for the fluid properties and geometry. An energy balance was used to determine the required river water flowrate. The log mean temperature difference and heat transfer coefficients were calculated to obtain an overall heat transfer coefficient. While the calculated coefficient is higher than assumed, further optimization of the design is still needed to determine the pressure drop.

Energy balance and determination of water flowrate:

2803.732 J/kg.K * (240K 130K)

LMTD and LMTD correction factor, FT:

Exchanger area estimate: Uo,assumed = 800 W/m^2K

Number of tubes and Shell diameter:

3/4 tubes were used with a length of 4 m

Tube side heat transfer coefficient, hi: 93 inch tubes BWG 14 were used with 2 tube passes

di = 0.0254m 2(0.0021082m) = 0.021184 m

8725.128 W/m^2.K

Shell side heat transfer coefficient, ho:

= 0.022 m^2

= 359.622 kg/s.m^2

= 467105.636 JH = 0.002 (from chart) Ideal Cross-flow coefficient(hoc) = 3750.779 W/m^2.K Correction factors: Fn = 0.97 Fb = 0.93 Fw = 0.93 Fl = 0.75 (1 sealing strip for every 5 tube rows used)

= 0.97*0.93*0.93*0.75*3750.779 W/m^2.K = 2360.045 W/m^2.K

Overall heat transfer coefficient, Uo: hid = 3000 W/m^2.K hod = 5000 W/m^2.K kw = 11.7 W/m^2.K (Stainless Steel)

Pressure drop yet to be determined. Since the calculated U value is higher than assumed the design will be further optimised.
