LISTENING STRATEGIES

LISTEN CAREFULLY TO EACH QUESTION FOR THE

KEY WORDS and THE PURPOSE OF EACH QUESTION!

FOR WH-QUESTIONS: QUESTION WORDS (WHO/WHAT/WHERE/WHEN/WHY/HOW/HOW

LONG/HOW MUCH/HOW OFTEN/HOW FAR, ETC.)

KEY WORDS ARE USUALLY NOUNS, VERBS, ADJECTIVES, OR ADVERBS.

PAY ATTENTION TO QUESTION TYPES:

YES/NO QUESTIONS (THE ANSWER TO A YES/NO QUESTION IS SOMETIMES A STATEMENT WITHOUT YES OR NO.)

WH-QUESTIONS (What?) TAG QUESTIONS (You love Laura, dont you?) NEGATIVE QUESTIONS (Dont you love Laura?)

ALTERNATIVE QUESTIONS (Do you love Laura or

Mary?)

STATEMENTS ( I love Laura.)

A QUESTION ALWAYS HAS ITS OWN PURPOSE. BESIDE GRAMMAR, PAY ATTENTION TO THE PURPOSE OF EACH QUESTION!

EXAMPLE QUESTION: What time does the movie start? RESPONSE: (GRAMMAR) AT 7.30. (PURPOSE) I dont know. or I have no idea. or I will call the cinema to find out.
